To get to Ekenäs, Finland, Felix De Bona had to take a 14-hour flight and connect through Copenhagen or Oslo, the capitals of Denmark and Norway, respectively.
Ekenäs, after all, is a 90-minute drive from Helsinki, Finland’s capital, and borders the outskirts of the Baltic sea. For a 24-year-old recent graduate of Boston University – one whose life already included stops in his native Brazil, Spain, Everett, Mass., and his hometown of Somerville, Mass., – he wasn’t quite sure what he’d gotten himself into.
