During a normal spring, through a recruiting lens, University of Rhode Island men’s assistant coach Tony Bassett would be quite busy.
He’d attend the Jefferson Cup down in Richmond, Va., drive around New England to top-end club games and help the the back-to-back Atlantic 10 champions run two different ID clinics each April. There might even be international recruiting trips overseas.
But the COVID-19 pandemic has made this an atypical spring, and there's a Division I NCAA-wide recruiting dead period that currently lasts through July 31. Under that mandate, coaches aren’t allowed to host recruits for visits or run camps, plus can't see in-person games.
