When asked about coaching education, Jason Dewhurst, director of coaching for FC Stars, starts rattling off stories. There’s his friend who flew to Houston three times to receive a U.S. Soccer coaching license. Dewhurst has heard that the ‘A’ and ‘B’-level courses fill up within an hour, and he knows firsthand that "it’s too expensive" and "unless you’re full-time, it’s hard."
Andy Branton, boys director of coaching for Aztec Soccer, airs similar grievances when he tackles the same topic.
"I have a coaching peer from another club, he just got his USSF ‘B’ license, but that included three round trips to Chicago, about $10,000 in expenses, and nearly 600 hours of practice and paperwork," Branton said. "How does the average dad with a wife and two children and a dog manage that?"
