UMass-Boston produced the best season in program history in 2016, winning its third consecutive LEC tournament title, winning its first ever NCAA tournament game, and setting the school record for most wins (18) and longest unbeaten streak (13).
The team flourished defensively and center back Marcelo Cunha was a key part of that success.
Cunha was named a NSCAA secondteam All-American, becoming only the second Beacon to earn All-America status, as well one of only six New England players to earn NSCAA All-American honors in 2016. He started 22 of the team’s 23 games, setting a school record for most starts in a season.
