As Andrew Stevens (Marshfield, Mass.), a senior midfielder and captain for Brooks, stepped away from the celebrations, he found himself reminiscing on what unfolded a day prior.
The Bishops had just knocked off South Kent, previous back-to-back champion, to win the NEPSAC Class B title by a 3-2 scoreline on a blustery Sunday afternoon last month at the Northfield Mount Hermon School. But his mind jumped to that Saturday, when Brooks hosted Suffield for its semifinal match.
A vast alumni network — including former U.S. national team star Charlie Davies (Manchester, N.H.) and former Seattle Sounders forward Michael Fucito (Concord, Mass.) — came out, all for one reason. It was their last chance to see Dusty Richard, Brooks’ 40-year head coach, man the sideline at home.
"To see all those guys there who have played for Dusty, it gave us that extra inspiration," said Stevens, who will play collegiately at Columbia. "We knew that we’d have to do this for Dusty and send him out on top."
