This past September, the Boston College men’s soccer team turned heads when it opted out of competing alongside its 11 fellow ACC programs.
That player-led decision, which put a pause on first-year head coach Bob Thompson’s first official game, was made in light of COVID-19 pandemic factors. The Eagles weighed who was available – injuries and travel concerns cut down their roster size – and decided to wait.
Was it the right call? Unequivocally yes, Thompson said when asked about a move that ensured all 22 Division I men’s teams across New England would spend the Fall 2020 semester without official competition.
