During the offseason, the New England Revolution invested in coaches, players, scouts and their academy. But the team has yet to prove the value of those commitments on the playing field.
After going winless in the first three games of the season (0-2-1), the Revs are preparing for a home match against FC Cincinnati on Sunday, a chance for their first meaningful victory since last September.
Last season, New England started strong but slumped after the World Cup break to a 4-9-5 record. The team's only victory while still in contention was a 1-0 win at New York City FC on Sept. 5, and they have not gained a meaningful home victory since beating D.C. United, 3-2, on June 30.
But coach Brad Friedel seems confident.
