
As a Major League Soccer rookie, it’s hard to envision a better scenario that Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu (Bellingham, Mass.) could have entered.
In 2017, after a four-year career at Harvard University, he was selected by then-expansion side Atlanta United in the SuperDraft, joining a haul that included fellow locals in Providence College midfielder Julian Gressel and Syracuse center back Miles Robinson (Arlington, Mass.).
The next two years proved invaluable, learning under head coach Tata Martino and playing alongside now-Newcastle United midfielder Miguel Almiron and striker Josef Martinez, the reigning MLS MVP. It all peaked on Dec. 8, with the Five Stripes winning MLS Cup, 2-1, at home over the Portland Timbers.
