Until recently, Boston College head coach Ed Kelly didn’t personally know Amos Shapiro-Thompson (Worthington, Mass.).
Like most coaches in American soccer circles, he heard bits and pieces about the former U.S. youth international, Milton Academy star and New England Revolution Academy player as he navigated through the European soccer scene.
There was a stint in Spain. And then his time at Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia, a world-famous academy that’s helped produce the likes of midfielder Luka Modric (Real Madrid), center back Dejan Lovren (Liverpool) and forward Andrej Kramaric (1899 Hoffenheim), among others. And even an eventual shift to Legia Warsaw, a historic club in Poland, where Shapiro-Thompson scored in friendlies against Juventus and trained with the first team, drawing the admiration of then-head coach Ricardo Sa Pinto in the process.
