Back when Alex DeSantis was weighing his college soccer options, UMass wasn’t even on his radar screen.
As a local kid from Belchertown, Mass., just a 20-minute drive away from the Amherst campus, he wanted to venture farther away from home. That’s why Stonehill College, a Division 2 school, and Wheaton College, a Div. 3 school, were his top options as the spring of his senior year rolled around.
But then Sam Koch and Devin O’Neill, former coaches for the Minutemen, came calling and he went on a tour. He’d never even attended a UMass game, but DeSantis followed his gut instinct and decided the burgundy and white made the most sense for him.
